False Bomb Alert At Air Base

The Ministry of Defence last night confirmed a suspected bomb scare at an RAF base in south England was a false alarm.

Disposal experts were drafted in to examine suspicions raised by trained sniffer dogs at the Lyneham barracks, near Swindon.

The dog had reacted to suspected explosive residues on a vehicle entering the base.

It was widely reported a home-made bomb had been found, however, no device discovered.

"It's been given the all clear. They will continue to investigate to see why the dogs reacted to the vehicle," a spokeswoman for the MoD said.

RAF Lyneham is one of the service's largest and busiest operational stations and houses the MoD's Hercules transport fleet.

The bodies of many of the soldiers killed in Afghanistan are repatriated to the base.
