Appeal After Tyneside Armed Robbery

Police in North Tyneside have appealed for information following an armed robbery at a supermarket.

Thieves struck at Asda hypermarket on Whitley Road in Benton at 3.20am yesterday (1st September).

The store was closed to the public at the time but staff were inside restocking shelves.

"Two intruders entered the store after forcing their way in, they are believed to have been armed with a shotgun and a machete, both were wearing masks," said a police spokesman.

"They grabbed some tills and made off from the store. No one was injured, the firearm was not discharged, but staff were shocked. It is not yet clear what was stolen during the robbery," he added.
