Stabbed Footballer's Career Worries

Doubts have been cast over West Ham player Calum Davenport's professional career, after he sustained serious stabs wounds to his legs at the weekend.

A man has been remanded in custody charged with the attack on Mr Davenport and his mother Kim Stupple, which took place at their Bedfordshire home on Saturday morning.

Mr Davenport, 26, is still in a hospital intensive care ward, having undergone surgery on his legs. His condition is described as stable. Ms Stupple is also receiving medical care.

Worrell Whitehurst appeared in court yesterday charged with causing grievous bodily harm with intent to Mr Davenport and causing actual bodily harm to Ms Stupple.

The 25-year-old accused, who also faces a charge of driving while disqualified, is believed to be the boyfriend of Mr Davenport's sister.

Mr Whitehurst, of Finsley Walk, was arrested in Derby on Saturday, and is scheduled to appear at Luton Crown Court on 16 November.

A 19-year-old man arrested after the stabbing has been released on bail by Bedfordshire Police pending further inquiries.

In court yesterday, concerns were raised over Mr Davenport's professional future. He was bought by Premiership side West Ham United in 2007 for £3m and has since been on loan to rivals Sunderland and Watford.
