Man Remanded Over West Ham Star Attack

A man accused of stabbing West Ham United player Calum Davenport has been remanded in custody.

The footballer and his mother were attacked in their Bedfordshire home on Saturday morning.

Worrell Whitehurst, 25, of Finsley Walk, Derby, appeared in court this morning charged in relation to the stabbing, which left Davenport in intensive care with wounding to his legs.

The accused was charged with causing grievous bodily harm with intent to 26-year-old Davenport, and causing actual bodily harm to the player's 49-year-old mother Kim.

Both victims are described as being in a stable condition in hospital, with Davenport having undergone surgery on his legs.

Mr Whitehurst, who was arrested in Derby and faces a further charge of driving while disqualified, appeared at Bedford Magistrates' Court earlier today.

A 19-year-old man arrested after the stabbing has been released on bail by Bedfordshire police, pending further inquiries.

Davenport was bought by West Ham for £3m two years ago, and has since spent time on loan to rivals Sunderland and Watford.

Police have appealed for anyone with any information about the stabbing in Kempston to contact them.
