Lib Dems Admit Donations Breach

The Liberal Democrats have been forced to repay a party donation of more than £1,300 after breaching electoral rules.

South London MP Susan Kramer's son, Jonathan, donated the money to the party.

When it was discovered Mr Kramer was not on the UK electoral register the Lib Dem were forced to hand back the cash.

The funding was give to the party between December 2008 and March 2009.

Parties can only accept donations from those on the electoral roll.

A Lib Dem spokesman said Mr Kramer was unaware that he was no longer on the register.

The Political Parties, Elections and Referendums Act 2000 says political parties must not accept donations from an 'impermissible' donor.

Political parties must validate donations within 30 days - something the Lib Dems failed to do. Donations that are not deemed permissible must be handed back.

As the Lib Dems took action as soon as it became apparent there was a problem with Mr Kramer's gesture, no legal action will be take, the Electoral Commission said.
