Met Officer Dies In Diving Accident
A Metropolitan Police officer has died while diving in the English Channel, according to emergency services.
The 57-year-old officer was one of two men who were airlifted to Worthing hospital after getting into difficulties while on a diving expedition off the Sussex coast on Saturday afternoon.
The officer, who lived in Watford, later died in the hospital. The other man was released from hospital on Sunday.
A Met Police spokeswoman said: "We are saddened by the death of one of our serving officers. He was attached to the child abuse investigation command."
Solent Coastguard scrambled the helicopter after receiving a mayday call from a vessel at around 1.12pm to say the men were making a rapid ascent.
A post mortem examination is to be held later to determine the cause of the officer’s death.
