E Coli Alert Closes Fish Bar

There was a major health alert underway yesterday as two people were hospitalised following a suspected outbreak of E.coli.

In all, a total of four people have been taken ill and a food premises in Llay, Wrexham, North Wales, has been closed.

A spokeswoman for Wrexham Council's Environmental Health Department in north Wales said the cases of E.coli type O157 had affected three families from the Wrexham area.

The Llay Fish Bar on Council Street in Llay, Wrexham, is alleged to be the takeaway at the centre of the suspected outbreak - something that Wrexham Council confirmed.

It said on Monday that the Llay Fish Bar has been closed. Officials obtained a closure order from the magistrates court at midday on Monday and "the takeaway will remain closed while further investigations are carried out", a council spokeswoman said.

"It will remain closed until we're satisfied that health requirements and legislation have been met."

The worried husband of one patient, Paul Morrisroe-Clutton, told the BBC that they had a takeaway last Monday and his wife fell ill the following day.

He said: "We thought it was salmonella and Karen would take some medication and it would be fine but she just deteriorated.

"She's still very critical but the doctors, who are absolutely out of this world, they remain optimistic, but at any moment it could get worse, but she is still stable, her body is trying to fight this disease."
