Biggs Redmitted To Hospital With 'Severe Pneumonia'

Great Train Robber, Ronnie Biggs, has been taken to hospital with severe pneumonia, his son has said. The 79-year-old inmate at Norwich Prison was readmitted to the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital, where he had been treated last month for a serious chest infection and a fractured hip. His son Michael said: "It is the worst he's ever been. The doctors have just told me to rush there." Biggs was last month refused parole by Justice Secretary Jack Straw, saying he was "wholly unrepentant" about his crimes.

Arrested After Man Stabbed

A 50-year-old woman is being questioned by police after a man was found with a stab wound in Peterborough. The 38-year-old was found by ambulance staff at Heath Row, Dogsthorpe, on Moday evening. A woman from Peterborough was arrested on suspicion of murder. Det Insp Dave Grierson said house-to-house inquiries are being carried out.

Man Shot In Street

A man, thought to be in his 40s, has died after being shot in a West Midlands street. The victim was shot outside a bar in The Orchard, Bilston, in Wolverhampton, during the early hours. He was taken to hospital where he was later pronounced dead. He is not being named at this stage. The Orchard and nearby roads are closed while police investigations continue. Anyone who saw the incident should contact West Midlands Police.

Two Held Over Assault

Youths, aged 16 and 17, have been arrested following a late night assault in Nairn. A man was seriously injured in the incident on the town's Mill Road on Sunday night. Northern Constabulary said a report would be submitted to the procurator fiscal in Inverness. Following the attack, police appealed for witnesses and information to help them trace people seen near the scene at the time.

Minister Welcomes Key Crossrail Station Progress

Transport Minister Sadiq Khan visited the construction site at the Crossrail Canary Wharf Station today to see the progress being made on Western Europe's largest infrastructure project. Canary Wharf is the first Crossrail station under construction and the start of work was marked on 15 May this year by a joint visit from the Prime Minister, the Secretary of State and the Mayor of London. Sadiq Khan said: “This project will boost the UK economy by at least £20bn and create and support thousands of jobs, relieve congestion and provide a high speed rail link across London. It's good news to see that this project is well and truly underway. Work is on schedule, with the station foundations being laid through a specialist 'Giken' piling method designed to minimise noise pollution to surrounding buildings.”

Gym Fire 'Was Started Deliberately'

A fire which badly damaged a private gym early on Sunday morning was begun deliberately, it has been confirmed. Ed Brookes, owner of Abergele Fitness Ltd in Conwy county, said it was the third arson attack on the premises in the past eight weeks. The gym opened in January, and has more than 200 members. He estimated that it caused about £20,000 worth of damage, but he said he hoped to be able to reopen for business later in the week. North Wales Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that the blaze was started deliberately.

June Data Signals Flattening Prices

The latest figures from Land Registry show a modest improvement in the monthly change in house prices in England and Wales. The June increase of 0.1 per cent is the first time monthly change has been positive since January 2008. The annual drop of 14 per cent took the average house price to £153,046. London experienced the greatest monthly rise with a movement of 2 per cent, making it the region with the greatest monthly change and an average property value of £301,859. All regions in England and Wales experienced a decrease in their average property values over the last 12 months. The region with the most significant annual price fall was the North East with a movement of -15.9 per cent. Luton experienced the greatest annual price fall with a drop of 23 per cent. The most up-to-date figures available show that during April 2009 the number of completed house sales fell by 42 per cent to 36,233 from 62,393 in April 2008.

UK House Prices Rise
In the year to February 2012, UK house prices increased by 0.3 per cent, according to the Office of National Statistics (ONS). The average UK mix-adjusted house price was £224,473. Average house prices increased in both England and Scotland by 0.4 per cent and 1.1 per cent respectively.

Hot Weather Boosts High Street Sales
Sales in the high street have risen by 1.2% in June as the hot weather has boosted demand for summer clothes, official figures have today revealed. British retail sales jumped at three times the rate analysts expected last month with clothing selling particularly well, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) figures revealed.

Plumber 'Jailed' Over Explosion
A Wolverhampton plumber has been given a ten-month suspended jail sentence for causing a gas explosion and fire in which a pensioner sustained 21 per cent burns rescuing his nine-year-old granddaughter.

One In Three Year Six Children Overweight
One in three final year primary school children are overweight or obese. The percentage of final year – Year 6 - primary school children (generally aged ten to 11) who were overweight or obese increased to 33.9 per cent in 2011/12, up from 33.4 per cent in the previous year.

Robberies on the rise, crime survey reveals
Robberies in England and Wales rose by eight per cent in the last three months of 2006, according to the latest figures from the Home Office. The latest British Crime Survey revealed the eight per cent increase in robberies between October and December last year.
