British Serviceman Killed In Afghan Blast
A British soldier has been killed in an explosion in Afghanistan, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) has confirmed.
The serviceman, from the Light Dragoons, died in a blast near Gereshk in Helmand Province, southern Afghanistan, on Tuesday night.
The MoD said next of kin have been informed.
Lieutenant Colonel Nick Richardson, spokesman for Task Force Helmand, said: "This soldier gave his life for the security of his own country and the freedom of the Afghan people; there is no greater sacrifice than this.
"Our deepest and heartfelt sympathies go to his family and loved ones."
The death brings the number of UK service personnel killed in the country to 176, and is the seventh in one week.
The soldier was part of Operation Panther’s Claw - a major assault against the Taliban.

The Ministry of Defence has confirmed the name of a British soldier killed in a bomb explosion in Iraq on Sunday. Major Matthew Bacon, 34, from the London area, was travelling in an armoured landrover in Basra, southern Iraq, when a roadside bomb exploded, hitting the vehicle.

The Stormont First Minister Peter Robinson has this morning expressed his sympathy to the family of a soldier from the 1st Battalion Irish Guards who has been killed in Afghanistan. The Ministry of Defence (MoD) announced that he was shot in an ambush while patrolling in the Nahr-e Saraj district of Helmand Province yesterday afternoon.

Two more British soldiers have been killed in separate incidents in southern Afghanistan. In the first incident, a soldier from 4th Battalion The Rifles, was killed in a contact explosion, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) announced this morning. The soldier was out on a foot patrol near Nad Ali.
