Carehome Manager Denies Two Murders

A carehome manager has appeared in court today charged with the murders of two elderly residents care home she co-ran with her husband.

Registered nurse Rachel Baker, 43, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

A third murder charge against Mrs baker, who ran Parkfields Residential Care Home in Butleigh, was dropped due to "insufficient evidence".

The 43-year-old, who is jointly charged with her husband Leigh Baker, 50, of a single count of perverting the course of justice - also faces 11 counts of possession of controlled class A and class C drugs.

The court heard the couple; both of Boundary Way, Glastonbury took over the care home in 1988.

The home is now under new management and operating under the name Avalon Court.

Mrs Baker is alleged to have murdered Clara "Lucy" Cox, 97, and Mary "Francis" Hay, 85, between 2006 and 2007.

Meanwhile a murder charge relating to the death of Marion Alder, 79, was dropped after the prosecution did not offer sufficient evidence.

Mr and Mrs Baker were released on bail at the hearing which took place on Friday.

The case was adjourned for a further case management hearing on 18 September with a potential trial date set for January next year.

Police have made a formal identification of the man and woman found dead in Chard on Sunday. The bodies of 42-year-old Tracey Baker and 35-year-old Kevin Baker were found at their home in Wellings Close on Sunday morning. They were a married couple.

Pair Stand Trial For Man's Death

Bradley Baker died after being found unconscious in Paradise Lane, off Norfolk Street, in King's Lynn, Norfolk on May 6. Mr Baker died from head injuries in Queen Elizabeth hospital in King's Lynn later that day.

Mobile Customers To Share £1m Refund
Mobile provide EE is to refund around £1m to a number of customers wrongly charged VAT between October 2012 and October 2014. It is understood that EE customers who travelled outside the EU during those dates and used internet data were affected by the charges. The company estimated it as being about 0.5% of its customers.

Rent For Road Works Scheme Launched
The Government has announced new powers to help councils cut disrupting road works. Transport Minister Norman Baker said on Thursday that under ‘lane rental’ schemes, councils will be able to charge utility companies up to £2,500 a day to dig up the busiest roads during peak times when road works cause the most disruption.
