UK Car Production Drops From 43% In May

The number of cars produced in Britain in May 2009 was 43% lower than in the same month last year, new figures released today have shown.

However, it was the smallest fall of the year so far, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) said.

A total of 67,754 cars were made in the UK in May 2009. The previous four month-on-month falls had each been more than 50% and this was the least-steep reduction since November last year.

The industry group also said in the year-to-date, there were 319,022 cars produced - 54.0% lower than a year earlier.

"The scrappage schemes in place across Europe are now beginning to have a positive impact although the full benefits will take a little longer to flow down to companies at all levels in the supply chain," Paul Everitt, SMMT chief executive, said.

Under the scheme, car buyers are given a £2,000 discount on a new car if they scrap one that is at least one year old.

The government said the scheme had given the car-making industry the boost it needed.

Mr Everitt added: "Commercial vehicle production is severely affected by low business confidence and economic uncertainty.

"Businesses across the economy are still holding back on new expenditure and will need to see better access to finance and stronger domestic demand."
