Cameron Questions MP Cash's Rental Expenses

A backbench Tory MP, who reportedly claimed for rent expenses on a flat owned by his daughter, has came under fire from party Leader David Cameron.

Mr Cameron said Bill Cash has "very serious questions to answer" for the alleged £15,000 claim.

It has been reported Mr Cash rented a flat from his daughter, under the second home allowance, despite owning a property closer to Parliament.

He said it was within the rules, and cost the taxpayer no more than if he had rented one elsewhere.

Harriet Harman, the Labour Party's Deputy Leader, today said colleagues who were found of any wrongdoing would have to "pay the price".

The Daily Telegraph, now in its third week of expenses revelations, reported Mr Cash designated his daughter's Notting Hill property as his "second home" in 2004-5.

He claimed more than £15,000 for the rent, despite owning his own flat in Pimlico, according to the newspaper.

Mr Cash, MP for Stone in Staffordshire, said when the claims were made they were within the rules, and the tenancy agreement had been cleared by the Commons Fees Office.

In response to the latest reports, Conservative boss Mr Cameron said: "I think Bill Cash has got some very serious questions to answer.

"He needs to answer those questions and also cooperate with the inquiry that the Conservative Party is holding.

"And everyone knows the consequences of not cooperating with those inquiries - and that's what needs to happen."

Mr Cameron has taken a tough stance on excessive expenses claims, stating that any Tory MPs deemed to have over-claimed would be sacked from the party.
