Met Police Commander Faces Misconduct Charges

Metropolitan Police Commander Ali Dizaei is facing charges of misconduct in public office and perverting the course of justice.

The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) said the charges relate to an investigation by the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC), and are linked to an incident at a south west London restaurant last year.

Mr Dizaei, president of the National Black Police Association, arrested a man on Friday 18 July last year after a row in the restaurant.

CPS lawyer Gaon Hart said: "These charges relate to an incident in which Mr Dizaei, in his capacity as a police officer, arrested a man on allegations of assault. A decision not to charge that individual was made by the CPS in August 2008.

"Following an investigation by the IPCC, a file was submitted to me in November 2008. I asked the IPCC to undertake further inquiries this month."

Mr Dizaei has been suspended from duty for the last eight months and will be one of the highest ranked officers to ever face a criminal trial.

The investigation is one of three separate inquiries underway. He denies any misconduct.

Members of the MPA's complaints and professional standards sub-committee said "suspension is not a disciplinary sanction" or "a presumption of guilt."

They added: "The MPA has a statutory duty to investigate all allegations of misconduct and takes this responsibility very seriously."
