West Brom Striker Suspended Over Drug Allegations
West Bromwich Albion striker Roman Bednar has been suspended by the club, following allegations he bought illegal drugs.
The 26-year-old Czech international was suspended after the News of the World published a report and five photos of Bednart allegedly handing over cash for drugs.
The paper claimed the 26-year-old, confronted by its reporter, said the drugs were not for his own use.
Bednar was not in the squad that was beaten by Liverpool 2-0 on Sunday. The defeat confirmed the Baggies relegation to the Championship.
However, despite his suspension Bednar is hoping to play for West Brom next season.
"I'm sorry and deeply regretful for the stories that have emerged in the press and the embarrassment and the negative publicity it's brought to the directors, players and staff of West Bromwich Albion and all their supporters," Bednar said in a statement.
"My biggest disappointment today is the team’s relegation to the Championship and sincerely I hope to have the opportunity to help the club regain promotion next season."
Bednar joined West Brom from Heart of Midlothian in August 2007 initially on loan before the deal was made permanent last summer for £2.3 million.
He scored 17 times in 22 starts as the club won promotion to the Premier League and made it to the semi-finals of the FA Cup.
This season he scored six goals, but has not played in the club’s last five matches before being left out of Sunday’s game.
