Teenager Dies After Cliff Jump Tragedy
A teenager from Whitburn, near Sunderland, has died after jumping into the sea from cliffs.
Jamie Sutton, 17, from Rose Crescent, Whitburn, South Tyneside, who was out playing with friends on rocks near Souter Point, was pulled from the water, but died later in hospital.
Emergency services were alerted when a distraught family member made a 999 call to say the teenager had got into difficulties in the rough seas near Souter Lighthouse.
Jamie was pulled from the water and two RNLI volunteers attempted to give him emergency resuscitation, after the incident which happened at around 5.40pm on Wednesday.
An investigation has been launched by Northumbria Police who are preparing a report for the coroner. No one else was suspected of involvement.
Chief Inspector Kevin Wellden said: "We cannot advise strongly enough against people going into the sea at this location as it is very difficult to judge the sea conditions as well as the depth of the water.
"We would urge parents to ensure their children are aware of the dangers."
