Eight Month Jail Term For Kenyan Aristocrat

The son of an English lord has been jailed for eight months for the manslaughter of a poacher in Kenya.

Thomas Cholmondeley - a descendant of the aristocratic Delamere family - shot the man, allegedly poaching on his Kenyan estate, in 2006.

Earlier this month the 40-year-old heir was found guilty of manslaughter.

Mr Cholmondeley was told he would receive a light sentence for the killing of the black local.

A judge previously ruled that the shooting of 37-year-old Robert Njoya did not show "malice aforethought".

The Delamere heir, who can trace his linage to the foremost white settler in the African nation, showed no emotion when the sentence was handed down.

Today's packed court, which had attracted the world's press, was told the jail term was not influenced by Mr Cholmondeley's offer of financial compensation to his victim's family.

The case is said to have stoked race relations in the region, with protesters picketing the proceeding, and waving placards reading "The Butcher of Naivasha".

Mr Cholmondeley was acquitted of similar charges involving the shooting a Maasai ranger in 2005.
