Woman Remanded Over 'Hit-And-Run' Death

A 27-year-old woman has been remanded in custody, charged with the alleged hit-and-run killing of a boy in Bristol.

Hannah Saaf, of St Michael's Hill, Bristol, appeared at the city's Magistrates' Court, accused of killing 11-year-old Sam Riddall.

Sam died after a car mounted the pavement and ran into him as he walked home from a youth service in Westbury-on-Trym on 1 May.

Ms Saaf faced four charges of causing death by dangerous driving, failing to stop and/or report an accident, driving otherwise than accordance with her licence and driving without insurance.

Sam had been walking home from a church group at 9.15pm on 1 May when he was hit by the car. He had left a youth club service at the nearby Henleaze and Wesybury Community Church, and was walking along with Dr Peter Harbord, the father of one of his friends, and three other children.

The three other children - all thought to be aged 11 - were uninjured, while Dr Harbord received minor injuries and was released from hospital later that evening.

A white Ford Focus estate car was travelling along Eastfield Road towards the centre of the village when it careered off the road, mounted the pavement and hit the group.

Last week, the 11-year-old’s parents Martin and Rachel Riddall launched a public appeal for the driver of the car to come forward.

In a tribute to their son, Sam's parents described him as "the most wonderful of boys".

They also said: "We miss him very much indeed... we wish he was here with us every second of the day."

Ms Saaf will appear at Bristol Crown Court on 19 May.
