British Gas Cuts Electricity Prices By 10%
British Gas, the biggest supplier of electricity to homes in Britain, has cut an average 10% off its standard electricity prices.
The price cut for 4.5 million customers takes effect immediately.
British Gas's electricity rates are now as much as £111 lower than the local supplier. British Gas's dual fuel prices for customers who pay by monthly direct debit are now, on average, the cheapest in the UK. The average annual dual fuel bill for a British Gas customer is now £1,127.
The price cut follows the company's 10% cut on gas prices, which took effect on 19 February this year.
Managing Director, Phil Bentley, said: "British Gas is offering existing and new customers the cheapest electricity rates in the market place.
"We want to do what we can, when we can, for our customers. When we were able to cut gas prices earlier this year, we did. And I’m pleased we are now able to cut an average 10% from our standard electricity prices and continue to help our customers during this economic downturn."

Gas prices could rise again
British Gas has warned customers that gas prices could be increased again. Centrica, which owns British Gas, said that the price rises were being introduced because of expectations of an increase in wholesale prices. The price rises would follow a 12.4% increase in September last year and a further rise of 5.9% in January.

Centrica Posts £1 Million In Profits - To Consumers Anger
British Gas owner Centrica has posted half-year profits of almost £1 billion - much to the anger of consumer groups. Centrica maintain that it has been "absolutely necessary" to raise household gas prices as profits were down 20% in the first six months of this year to £992 million - down from £1.23 billion in 2007.

UK Inflation Remains At Current Rate
According to the Office for National Statistics (ONS), UK Consumer Prices Index (CPI) inflation remained unchanged at 3.1% in September. Including a higher proportion of housing costs, the Retail Prices Index (RPI), fell back slightly to 4.6%.

Npower Gas Prices Cut
Npower today announced reductions in domestic gas prices for approximately two million standard domestic gas customers averaging 7%, or £50. These cuts will take effect from 26 March and will make npower cheaper on average than British Gas for gas. Npower said its monthly direct debit gas customers will receive £50 a year discounts, up from £20.
