'Dr Death' Euthanasia Workshops Begin
A controversial euthanasia doctor dubbed "Doctor Death" has began a tour of Britain today.
Australian Dr Philip Nitschke began the event at the Hamilton Hall Hotel in Bournemouth, Dorsey at 10am today.
Dr Nitschke who runs Exit International - a voluntary euthanasia and assisted suicide information agency - was held for nine hours by immigration officials on Saturday, along with his partner Fiona Short, before being permitted to continue with their tour.
He was questioned under the Immigration and Asylum Act on arrival in the UK, but was granted leave to stay.
Plans to hold the first of the "suicide workshops" in a council-owned building in Bournemouth - a popular retirement resort - were abandoned after the local authority cancelled the booking. It is now being held in a local hotel.
Dr Nitschke will stage four public meetings discussing euthanasia before "closed sessions" for members of his Exit International organisation. Those members will be given information on different ways to die.
Those in attendance must be over 50 or seriously ill.
Dr Nitschke said: "You either give out the information or you say because it might be a potential risk then no-one should have the information.
"The underlying message seems to be that the way of keeping people on this planet is to prevent them from learning about ways to leave it.
"But people who don't want to live are not that common."
After speaking at the Hamilton Hall Hotel in Bournemouth, he plans to hold events in Brighton, Stroud, Gloucestershire and Glasgow.
