Teen Dies After Cave Roof Collapse
A teenager has been killed and another injured after the roof of a cave partially collapsed near Bridgnorth, Shropshire.
Aiden Peter Brookes, of Bridgnorth, was pronounced dead on arrival at hospital following the accident at Hermitage Caves.
A spokesman for the West Midlands Ambulance Service said: "It appears as though a group of youngsters were camping in the cave when part of the roof collapse.
"A teenage boy had suffered very serious injuries. 999 call handlers provided basic life support information over the phone to the other people in the cave until the ambulance crew arrived."
He added that ambulance staff carried out advanced life support as the boy was taken to Princess Royal Hospital, however, despite the efforts of ambulance and hospital staff, died shortly after arrival.
An 18-year-old girl from Bridgnorth, was also hurt in the incident. She suffered back, neck and rib injuries.
She was taken to the same hospital, and her condition is thought to be potentially serious but not life threatening.
A West Mercia spokesman said: "At this stage we are trying to establish exactly what happened but it seems that a quantity of rocks and rubble fell on those inside when a part the cave collapsed.
"It appears to be a tragic accident."
