Tory Clarke Clears-Up Stance
Shadow business secretary Kenneth Clarke has moved to clarify his stance on inheritance tax, after making a statement apparently off the mark with Conservative manifesto claims.
"I cannot see any significant difference between what I have said and what my colleagues have said.
"So far as I am concerned, we are fully committed to raising the threshold for Inheritance Tax in the first parliament of a Conservative government, as George Osborne has promised," said the veteran Tory.
Speaking on the BBC's Politics Show yesterday, Mr Clarke said raising the threshold for inheritance tax was not a top priority.
"I really don't think we're any longer saying that the Labour party is going to leave us in a position to make that the highest priority when we get in," he told the programme.
Last year, Mr Clarke's party pledged to raise the threshold for inheritance tax.
The promise was seen as a major pillar of the new Conservative Party ethos, and touted as one of the main reasons the Tories enjoyed a revival in public opinion polls.

Almost eight out of ten people believe the inheritance tax threshold is “grossly unfair”, research by financial service group Friends Provident has found. The rise in house prices over the last decade has seen millions more people becoming affected by the inheritance tax.

Darling Delivers Pre-Budget Report
Chancellor Alistair Darling has delivered his pre-Budget report in the Commons. Mr Darling predicted that Britain's economy would grow between 2% and 2.5% next year. Although this was down 0.5% on predictions, the Chancellor said that the economy was strong enough to withstand turbulence in the world economy.
