Daily Mail Group Cuts 1,000 Jobs
The Daily Mail and General Trust (DMGT) has announced it will axe 1,000 jobs as its advertising revenue for the first quarter of 2009 fell significantly.
The publisher, which owns the Daily Mail, the Mail on Sunday and around 100 regional titles, is expected to cut 1,000 jobs across its regional newspaper division Northcliffe Media – twice as many as had been originally feared.
The DMGT said recruitment ad revenues continue to decrease and are expected to be down 55% year-on-year in the first quarter.
Advertising for the first quarter of this year fell by 24% across its national newspaper division and 37% across its regional titles.
Northcliffe Media publishes 113 papers in the Midlands and south of England, selling 4.1 million copies a week.
DMGT said most of the cuts had already taken place or were under consultation. They would leave Northcliffe with around 3,500 staff by the end of the year.

Regional imports suffer £1bn slump
Government figures released today have revealed that the value of regional imports has slumped by around £1 billion over the past quarter. According the Customs and Excise report, estimates for the fourth quarter 2002 saw regional imports dip £1 billion, or 2%, on the third quarter's figures to £51.4 billion.

Royal Mail puts in 'poor' performance
The Royal Mail has performed poorly and is "unlikely" to meet any of the 15 minimum performance targets set out in its licence, according to the mail watchdog Postwatch. Postwatch said that Royal Mail’s third quarter performance was badly affected by unofficial industrial action, and would not meet its targets.

An Olympics fan has had five piercings in her upper thigh so she can wear the sporting event's iconic five rings. Laura Thornton, 27, made the one-inch wide tribute to the Games to "show support" for Team GB. She told the Daily Mail newspaper the procedure took just 30 minutes to complete.
