Green Custard Thrown At Peer In Protest

A female protester has thrown green custard over the Business Secretary as he arrived at a low-carbon summit in London.

Leila Deen, a member of the Plane Stupid activist group, campaigning over the third runway at Heathrow, carried out the stunt as Lord Mandelson emerged from his chauffeur-driven Jaguar in Central London.

Deen told reporters, after the incident, she was motivated by reports that the minister had held a meting with lobbyists for the British Airports Authority (BAA), just days before the government endorsed the runway plan.

She said: "The only thing green about Peter Mandelson is the slime coursing through his veins.

"That Mandelson is trying to make political capital out of climate change just days after reports that he met with BAA's top lobbyists to push through the third runway is an insult to my generation."

She added that her actions were a "last resort" after the democratic process failed.

The peer, who arrived at the conference not wearing his coat, called the protest "adolescent".

"She was so busy throwing what seemed like green soup or something in my face that she failed to tell me what the protest was about but, as you can see, thankfully it wasn't paint and I've come through intact."

The 'slime' was later identified as custard containing added colouring

Plan Stupid have launched a number of protests against a new runway at Heathrow, including blocking a runway at Stansted and scaling the roof of Parliament.

More recently, on Tuesday seven activists from the group were arrested after chaining themselves to a fortified fence in protest over Donald Trump's backing for the expansion of Aberdeen Airport following approval being granted for his £1bn golf project in Aberdeenshire by the Scottish Government.

Flights to and from the airport were temporarily suspended when the protest began.
