Police Officer Arrested Over Uefa Cup Riots
A police officer has been arrested on suspicion of being involved in a violent football riot in Manchester.
The man arrested, an Essex Police officer, was off-duty at the time of the clashes in Manchester city centre, as Glasgow Rangers were playing Zenit St Petersburg in the UEFA Cup Final last May.
According to a Greater Manchester Police spokeswoman: "The 44-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of violent disorder and has been released on bail pending further inquiries until 2 June 2009.
"The arrested man is a serving Essex police officer and was off-duty at the time of the incident."
It is thought the officer, who was caught on camera as the violence erupted, is a Glasgow Rangers fan.
The violence started before kick-off in the game between Rangers and the Russian side, and was sparked by a technical glitch that meant one of the big-screens erected in the city centre was not working.
An estimated 150,000 Rangers supporters descended on Manchester for the final, which Rangers lost 2-0.
A number of fans and at least 15 police officers were hurt in the clashes.
Police injuries include a broken arm, a dislocated shoulder and cracked ribs. Fans suffered cuts and at least one was bitten.
One Russian fan was also stabbed in the City of Manchester stadium.
Last month, Detective Superintendent Geoff Wessell said: "We want people to continue looking at the images online and help us put these violent thugs behind bars.
"These people may have worn the colours of Rangers but they could be from anywhere in the UK."
