Toddler Dies After Pushchair Plunges Into the Sea
A two-year-old girl has died in hospital after falling into the sea, police have confirmed.
The toddler was airlifted to hospital in London, after being recovered from the water at the Warren Apron near Folkstone, Kent, just before 3pm on Sunday.
An eight-month-old boy is in a stable condition at the William Harvey Hospital in Ashford, Kent.
The Dover coastguard had been called to Warren Apron, just before 3pm after reports that a pushchair had tumbled into the water.
A spokesperson for the Coastguard said four people had been walking on a pathway beneath the cliffs in the area. It was reported the group had stopped on a slope and the pushchair rolled into the sea.
The toddler had been unconscious when she was pulled from the sea.
John Miell, an off-duty lifeboat volunteer, who had been walking his dog when he heard cries for help, administered first aid.
"He ran to the scene and on the water's edge were two adults and two children who had been in the water," an RNLI spokeswoman said.
"He administered CPR until the emergency services arrived."
The adults were also hospitalised as a precaution. "They were cold and wet and obviously shaken up," a spokeswoman for the South East Coast Ambulance Service said. "Both the children were in a more serious condition."
A Kent spokeswoman said that despite efforts to save the girl, she died on Sunday evening.
