Thatcher BBC Documentary Gets 'Go-Ahead'

The BBC has reportedly commissioned a documentary by Carol Thatcher, based on her mother's life, amid a furore over a comment made by the former-Prime Minister's daughter.

Earlier this week, Ms Thatcher had her freelance contract with the BBC's One Show withdrawn, after she failed to apologise for an off-camera remark.

It is believed the journalist commented on a male tennis player's "resemblance" to a 'golliwog'.

Ms Thatcher declined to publicly denounce the controversial statement, reportedly made in the presence of presenter Adrian Chiles and comedian Jo Brand, while in the greenroom last Thursday evening.

However, more than 2,200 formal complaints have been made to the public service broadcaster over its alleged heavy handedness towards Thatcher.

The BBC has defended its decision.

Station controller Jay Hunt said: "What she decides to say at home in private is one thing, but we have given Carol ample opportunity to give a fulsome apology and she has chosen not to do so."

It is understood Ms Thatcher is to press ahead with a half-hour documentary for the channel, focusing on her mother, Baroness Thatcher.

The documentary will use previously unseen film footage and photographs of the 83-year-old Tory politician, and is expected to air in the autumn.
