Cold Snap Predicted For UK

Britain is expected to see the coldest winter for 13 years, with forecasters predicting a cold snap next week.

Experts are predicting freezing temperatures will take hold on Sunday, and will see heavy snow and bitterly cold winds from Russia on Monday and Tuesday.

Temperatures in some areas are forecast to plunge from up to 7C (45F) on Saturday daytime, to between -1C (30F) and -3C (27F) on Sunday night.

People have been urged to wrap up warm and expect disruption on the roads as the cold snap moves in from the east.

The coldest temperature ever recorded in the UK was -27C (-1F), on 30 December 1995, in Altnaharra, northern Scotland.

The Met Office warned that there was "a moderate risk of a severe event affecting eastern parts of Britain during Monday".

"Colder weather with snow showers, heavy at times, is likely to give some accumulations in places, with the highest amounts most likely over the higher ground further north," the forecaster said.

High pressure is building over Scandinavia, with snow predicted for eastern parts of England and Scotland. It is not expected to last beyond the middle of next week.
