Child Dies In Motorway Crash
A child has died and seven people have been injured after a people carrier came off the motorway and landed in a ditch near Taunton.
The child was killed after the Renault Scenic came off the M5 southbound in Somerset on Thursday.
The incident occurred between junction 24 and 25 and was reported to police at around 6.40pm. No other vehicles were involved.
It is thought the vehicle may have hit the central reservation on the road.
A spokesman for Avon and Somerset Police said: "The vehicle - a people carrier - ended up in a roadside ditch. A child, believed to be under the age of five years, has died."
It is understood the child was under the age of five.
Police also said the seven survivors were described as being in a "critical condition" in Musgrove Park Hospital.
Two occupants had to be freed with hydraulic cutting equipment after the Scenic came off the road between the Huntworth and Blackbrook junctions.
Anyone travelling between between those junctions in either direction at the time of the incident is asked to contact the road policing unit on 0845 4567000.

More people are calling the NSPCC Helpline about serious child abuse since the death of Baby Peter two years ago. Between April 2008 and March 2009, the 24-hour freephone service passed on 11,243 suspected child protection cases to police or social services - an increase of more than a third over two years.

Report notes increase in child porn sites
The number of child porn sites reported to police has increased by almost 80%, a new report has revealed. The report, by the Internet Watch Foundation, said that public intolerance of child abuse sites and the development of new skills aimed at tackling the distribution of such images had led to the increase in reports.

Children to have say in Commissioner appointment
The new Children's Commissioner will be chosen with the help of children and young people, the government announced today. Margaret Hodge, Minister for Children, Young People and Families, said that children "must be involved" in choosing the Commissioner if they are to truly represent their views.
