Morrison Sales Up

Food retailer Morrison has trumped the Christmas sales of higher-profile rivals Tesco and Asda.

Dubbed the UK's fourth biggest supermarket, Morrison said sales in the last quarter had increased by over 8%.

Operation from more than 320 stores nationwide, it is predicted the retailer serves around 10 million customers every well.

Business commentators have said the Morrison brand has benefited from its perceived value.

Particularly during the economic downturn, during which it has been suggested customers focus on price rather than convenience.

The business also ran well received promotions, including a scheme whereby shoppers were offered a £20 off voucher if they spent more than £40 in four of the five weeks before Christmas.

Tesco gained a 2.5% rise in sales for the seven weeks leading up to 10 January.

Sainsbury posted a 4.5% increase during the 13 weeks before the 3 January.

Asda faired slightly better, with turnover expanding by 6.9% in the last quarter of 2008.

Morrison today said it expects market condition to remain challenging.

"We remain cautious on the outlook for consumer spending and we expect the market to remain challenging," said a spokesman.
