Boy Questioned Over Alleged Rape
A 17-year-old boy has been arrested on suspicion of raping a schoolgirl in the changing rooms of a leisure centre. The attack on the 12-year-old girl happened on 9 December, but Northumbria Police only released the details this week. The incident took place in Temple Park Leisure Centre in John Reid Road, South Shields. The boy has since been bailed by police.
Pensioner Held Over Machete Attack
A pensioner has been arrested on suspicion of carrying out a machete attack on a driver in South Tyneside. Officers were called to Springwell Road, Jarrow to tackle a man armed with a large knife who was damaging a car. Northumbria Police said the 66-year-old driver suffered a cut to his face during the attack and is being treated at South Tyneside Hospital. His injuries are not thought to be life-threatening. The 76-year-old was arrested on suspicion of wounding.
Missing Man's Body Found In Woods
The body of a man who was reported missing for five days has been found in woodland in West Lothian. Matthew Carty, 43, of Fauldhouse, was last seen on Friday evening, in the wooded area north of Walker Road. Mr Carty’s body was found at about 1145 GMT on Wednesday, in a wooded area about a mile from where he was last seen. Next of kin have been informed, and his body has been formally identified. There were no suspicious circumstances surrounding his death. A report will be sent to the Procurator Fiscal.
Timber Washes Ashore In Kent
The timber cargo that broke free from the vessel Sinegorsk when she listed to 15 degrees in the English Channel has started to come ashore between Dover and Margate. Up to 1,500 metric tonnes of sawn timber was lost from the deck of the vessel whilst she was on passage to Alexandria in Egypt from Oskarshamn in Sweden. Contractors have been appointed by the Insurers to recover the lost cargo. Kent County Council are co-ordinating the local authority response.
Flood Alert Issued
A flood alert has been issued by police following heavy downpours across south west Scotland. The Whitesands area in Dumfries is expected to flood and drivers have been advised to move their vehicles from nearby parks. A number of roads in Dumfries and Galloway have already been affected by surface water. A renewed appeal to drivers to remove their cars from car parks next to the River Nith in Dumfries was made mid-morning on Thursday.

Third Body Found In Arson Attack Mansion
A third body has been found in the burnt-out mansion of a millionaire businessman. Christopher Foster, 50, his wife Jill, 49, and their 15-year-old daughter Kirstie had not been seen since the arson attack last Tuesday at Osbaston House, a large country estate in Shropshire. West Mercia Police are treating the case as a murder inquiry.

UK Troops Get Boost To Personal Protection
British troops fighting in the frontline are to receive new body armour and helmets this autumn, it has been announced. Over 10,000 sets of the enhanced Mark 7 helmet and the Osprey Assault body armour have been ordered from companies across the UK, under initial contracts worth around £16 million.

Body Found At Birmingham Recycling Plant
The body of a man has been found at a recycling plant in Birmingham. Workers at the plant on Armoury Road, Sparkhill, discovered the body shortly after 10am this morning (Wednesday). Police have cordoned off the plant and an investigation is underway. Police said they are trying to establish if the man's death is suspicious.

Torso And 'Other Body Parts' Found On Blackpool Beach
A decomposed torso and "other body parts" have been found on a beach in Blackpool. Lancashire Police have reported that the discovery was made just before 9am on Sunday in Queen's Promenade, opposite the junction with Cavendish Road. The gender of the victim is not yet known.

Stepbrother Of Becky Watts Charged With Murder
The stepbrother of 16-year-old Becky Watts has been charged with murder. Nathan Matthews, 28, has been remanded in custody and is due to appear before Bristol Crown Court on 2 April. His girlfriend, Shauna Hoare, 21, was also remanded in custody.
