Prisoner Escapes After Van Hold-Up
A prisoner has escaped and is on the run after an armed hold-up in west London.
The prison van was stopped just before 8am near Bedfont Lake, Feltham, by at least one armed man, police have confirmed.
It is understood the driver of the van was assaulted during the incident, but there were no shots fired. He is said to be in a stable condition in hospital.
A Scotland Yard spokesman said 20-year-old Wayne Joseph Connor escaped from the van and made off in a vehicle after two suspects, both wearing balaclavas, threatened the prison van drivers with a shotgun at approximately 7.20am this morning.
The prison van owned by Serco had just collected prisoners from Feltham Young Offenders Institute and was on its way to court.
The prison van was forced to pull over by the suspects' vehicle just before the Clockhouse Roundabout. Two men, both wearing balaclavas, approached the vehicle and smashed the driver's side window, the crew was threatened with a shotgun and the suspects demanded the release of Wayne Connor.
The suspects and Wayne Connor then made off in the vehicle, described as a dark blue car.
A Metropolitan police spokesman said: "Local officers and London Ambulance Service attended.
"The driver of the van is believed to have been assaulted.
"He was taken by London Ambulance Service to hospital and is in a stable condition."
Connor was due to attend Woolwich Crown Court today to stand trial for Racially Aggravated ABH, ABH, Aggravated Burglary and Burglary.
