Missing Evidence Uncovered After Media Appeal

Police investigating the murder of Ricardo Cox have found a missing bumper from a car involved in the shooting - thanks to public appeals.

The bumper of a black Honda Civic Hybrid used by the murderers, was found on Mitcham Common south of Commonside East on the grassy area, near to the junction with Watneys Road on Monday 1 December.

The person who found it contacted the incident room after seeing the media coverage.

Officers believe it was dumped there at approx earlier that morning - approx half an hour before a failed attempt to set the car alight was made on Peall Road, Croydon.

Suspects tried to set Honda Civic on fire Detective Chief Inspector Damian Allain, who is leading the investigation, said it was important for people to realise his teams appeal for help were continuing.

He said: "We are very grateful for the assistance the media has provided so far, with the recovery of the bumper just one benefit.

"It is important though that people do not think we no longer need information from them. Ricardo's death was brutal and we need the help of the public to bring those responsible to justice.

"Anyone who can assist is asked to call the incident room on 020 8721 4805; if you wish to remain anonymous please call Crimestoppers 0800 555111."

The investigation began after police were called to Mitcham Road on the evening of Wednesday 26 November, to a man suffering from gunshot wounds.

Ricardo Cox was taken to St George's Hospital and pronounced dead shortly after arrival. He was hit twice in the upper body. A post mortem examination gave a cause of death as a gunshot wound to the abdomen.

Ricardo was walking with a man along Mitcham Road, near to its junction with Derby Road. A dark coloured car pulled up alongside them and a number of shots were fired.

The car, which had a number of occupants, then drove off along Mitcham Road.

An 18-year-old man was arrested in the Tulse Hill area in connection with the inquiry on the 1 December and taken to a south London police station - he remains on police bail pending further enquiries.
