Welsh Lib Dems Name Female Leader

Kirsty Williams has been named as the Welsh Liberal Democrats' new leader, making her the first female party leader in the country's Assembly Government.

The Brecon and Radnorshire AM will replace Mike German after beating Cardiff Central AM Jenny Randerson, taking 60% of the vote.

Christine Humphreys, president of the Welsh Liberal Democrats said: "After weeks of campaigning from both sides, today is a culmination of the hard work both have put in.

"Welsh Liberal Democrats have chosen to elect Kirsty as their new leader. The first female leader in Welsh politics.

"I know that Kirsty is ambitious about bringing some major changes to Wales - I can't wait to start working with her to make it happen."

Ms Williams has been AM since 1999. She was also a member of the National Assembly Advisory Group (NAAG), which decided the institution's working arrangements when it was created.

A "fresh start" for the party, was promised by Ms Williams, who opposed the so-called 'rainbow coalition' with the nationalists and Conservatives.

Lib Dem leader also congratulated his new Welsh counterpart, saying her election was "excellent news" for the Welsh Lib Dems "and for Wales".

He added: "I know that Kirsty will be a strong champion for liberal values in the Senedd, helping to make Wales a fairer and greener nation."
