Mortgage Lending Still Falling

The number of mortgages being approved is still continuing to fall, the Bank of England has confirmed.

Their latest figures show that mortgage approvals fell to 32,000 in October, 1,000 less than in September.

The value of mortgages loaned also took a dramatic tumble in October, falling to £459 million, compared with £1.49 billion in September.

The figure is the second lowest on level and represents only 6% of the amount in October 2007.

Inflation On The Rise
UK inflation increased last month, rising to 2.2% from 2.1% in December. It is the fourth month in a row that that the Consumer Prices Index (CPI) inflation has remained above the government's 2% target and is the highest rate since June last year. The Retail Price Index (RPI), which includes mortgage interest payments, also rose to 4.

New Rules For Mortgage Lenders
The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) is introducing new rules for mortgage lenders and advisers in the UK. In the past, some people were allowed to take out a mortgage they could not afford. This led to some falling behind with their payments or losing their home.

Nine Held Over Alleged £40m Mortgage Fraud
Nine people are being questioned by police in relation to an alleged £40 million mortgage fraud, according to police. Officers from City of London Police fraud squad are searching six homes and three business premises in southern England. Eight men and one woman were held following the raids on the residential addresses in Sussex and north London.

Mortgage Lending Takes 'Slight Dip' In October
The number of mortgages agreed in the UK fell slightly in October, according to an industry report. The British Bankers Association (BBA) report that 42,808 loans were approved by UK banks last month, down by 375 on the number in September.

Compensation Possible For 30,000 Santander Customers
The UK's second largest mortgage provider, Santander, have said some 30,000 of its customers may be due compensation, due to errors made in 2008.
