Mother Cleared Of Toddler Murder
The mother of a toddler, who died from a number of injuries including a broken back, has been cleared of murder.
The 27-year-old woman was accused of killing the 18-month-old baby boy who suffered a catalogue of injuries and died in August 2007. She denied the charge of murder, but admitted allowing the death of a child.
Judge Stephen Kramer QC directed the jury to clear the mother and houseguest Jason Owen, 36, of murder, after hearing legal submissions following almost two months of evidence in the case.
He said there was insufficient evidence against the pair.
A court order has prevented identification of the baby's mother and her boyfriend, who are from Haringey, north London.
The trial will continue against the woman's boyfriend - who is facing a murder charge. Owen will also face charges of causing or allowing the boy's death. The men deny the charges, and have yet to testify in court.
The court heard the baby boy was placed on the Child Protection Register with Haringey Social Services nine months before he was found dead in his cot on August 3, 2007.
A post mortem examination carried out revealed a series of injuries including a broken back, eight fractured ribs, multiple injuries and an injury to the inside of his mouth.
The boy's mother - who pleaded guilty to causing or allowing the death before the trial started - has been remanded in custody and will be sentenced on 15 December.
