Man Sentenced To Life For Meredith Murder
A 21-year-old man has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of British student Meredith Kercher.
Rudy Guede, originally from the Ivory Coast, was convicted of rape and murder after a closed trial in Perugia, Italy. He was jailed for 30 years.
Judge Paolo Micheli also ruled the two other suspects, American student Amanda Knox, 21, and her former boyfriend, Italian Raffaele Sollecito, 24, are to face full trials for the killing.
The trial is due to begin at Perugia's court of assizes on 4 December.
Miss Kercher's family, from Coulsdon, Surrey, were in court to hear the decisions, which the judge reached after 11 hours of deliberation.
Lyle, the 21-year-old Leeds University student's brother, told a news conference: "We are as pleased as we can be with the decision.
"It is important to remember why we are here at the end of the day: it is because our sister Meredith was murdered.
"Pleased isn't an appropriate word. I think satisfied is probably the best we can say."
Guede, who had joint Italian and Ivory Coast nationality, underwent a fast-track trial, with no jury, at his own request. This allows suspects to receive a lesser sentence if they are convicted.
Meredith Kercher's semi-naked body was found at the house she shared in Perugia on 2 November last year. Her throat had been cut.
