New Car Registration Down 21% Last Month
The number of new car registrations fell by more than a fifth last month, compared to last year - further proof the ongoing credit crunch is impacting buyers' behaviour.
Figures released today, by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), show a 21.2% fall in new car registrations last month. In total 330,295 new cars were sold.
SMMT has urged the government to take "immediate action to restore consumer confidence".
So far in 2008 1,794,419 new motors have been sold, a year-on-year decrease of 7.5% compared to last year.
Despite marked falls in volumes, the market share occupied by diesel vehicles rose by 42.8% in September.
"New car registrations have fallen for the fifth consecutive month and represent the most difficult economic conditions the industry has faced in 17 years," said Paul Everitt, SMMT Chief Executive.
"Government action is now needed to restore consumer confidence and boost demand in the real economy.
"The chancellor's pre-budget report should set out a package of measures to boost demand for new fuel-efficient cars and scrap plans for unfair increases in car tax," added Mr Everitt.
A leading financier has described the new figures as "dreadful".
UBS economist Amit Kara said: "I think if there's any more evidence that the BoE need to convince them that policy rates should go down, then this is it
"There's compelling evidence now - that the economy has ground to a halt," he said.
September is normally the most popular month for new registrations within the UK's highly seasonal car market.
It is one of two months when registration plates with a new date are issued, enabling buyers' cars to look newer for longer.
