Woman Fatally Stabbed At London College

Police in East London have launched an investigation after a woman was fatally stabbed at the offices of a college for overseas students.

The 23-year-old victim suffered stab wounds to the neck and chest, in the St George's College office on Balaam Street, Plaistow, Scotland Yard said.

A second woman was also injured in the attack. She was taken to hospital and was later discharged.

Immediately before the attack happened a 29-year-old man - wearing a wig and a 'Phantom of the Opera'-type mask - was seen in the area, according to police.

The suspect - who was taken to hospital and treated for neck injuries - was arrested in relation to the attack.

He is said to be in a stable condition and will be taken to a police station for questioning later.

Detectives from the Homicide and Serious Crime Command are investigating under DCI Bob Mahoney who said: "The suspect was seen immediately before the incident in the local area wearing a black curly wig and a 'Phantom of the Opera' style face mask.

"We would appeal for anyone who may have seen him to contact us as soon as possible.

"I would also like to pay tribute to the bravery of the first officers on the scene - one a probationer - who with little regard to their own safety ran inside and disarmed the suspect of the knife he was holding. They then made the arrest."

Detectives said the incident took place at an office, above a shop, which is registered to the college.
