Brits Spend 14 Years In Front Of Tele, Says Report

There's a lot you could do in 14 years.

Earn a doctorate, take a few world cruises, learn to play the piano at a grade eight level and perhaps cram in a few kids?

However, it seem the majority of Britons spend a whopping 14 years of their lives simply vegetating in front of the television - that's according to a new survey.

Research conducted by Virgin Media found that around 29% of people in the UK watch TV around 20 hours a week.

Almost three-quarter (71%) said they often viewed programmes for the sake of it.

Over one in ten people (13%) suggested they find it unbearable missing their favourite show.

Virgin Media calculated if someone reached the average life span of 78 years it was likely they had watched TV for over a decade of their time on the planet.

And when we're not watching the box then we're talking about it to our friends, according to the report.

The research is based on a sample of 2,052 people, more than half (52%) of who claimed the previous night's television offerings regenerated the bulk of their conversations with family and friends.

Psychologist Honey Langcaster-James said: "We don't realise how much we watch affects us - so it's rather worrying that 71 percent of us watch stuff for the sake of it."
