Fire Destroys Historic Fleetwood Pier
An overnight blaze has swept through an Edwardian pier on the Lancashire coast, destroying all the buildings along the once-popular seaside attraction.
It is believed the fire at Fleetwood Pier broke-out yesterday afternoon in a pub-cafeteria at the pier's shore end.
Ten fire engines and 70 firefighters battled the flames at the 150-metre-long pier, before bringing it under control.
A spokesperson for Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service said no casualties had been reported.
"All the buildings on top of the pier have been destroyed,
"The concrete structure that is holding the pier up is still in place, it hasn't collapsed. But it certainly looks fairly miserable from here," said the spokesperson.
Fire investigators are working with police to establish the cause of the blaze.
The attraction, which opened at the coastal resort in 1910, had been disused for 12 months.
The pier was rebuilt in 1953 after sustaining an almost disastrous fire the previous year.
The news comes just two months after a dramatic fire that decimated a 104-year-old pier at the Somerset resort of Weston-super-Mare.
In 2005, part of the Southend Pier at Southend-on-Sea also sustained a serious fire.

Suspicious blaze destroys pier buildings
A fire which destroyed a section of the Southend Pier is being treated as suspected arson. The fire appears to have started in a pub, the Jolly Fisherman, and spread quickly to other parts of the pier's wooden structure.
