Newborn's Body Found At Recycling Plant

The body of a newborn baby has been found at a recycling centre in Cambridgeshire.

A worker at the council-owned plant in Fourth Drove in the Fengate area of Peterborough, made the grim discovery of the body among the household rubbish at about 7.30am.

The plant is operated by Viridor Waste Management Ltd and handles the contents of domestic green recycling bins.

An investigation has begun at the facility, which has been cordoned off.

A police spokeswoman said the death is being treated as suspicious.

It is not known whether the baby was a boy or a girl.

A council spokesman said: "The materials recycling facility will remain closed while police continue their investigation following the tragic discover.

"Staff remain on site and, once police have concluded their work, the facility will reopen."

A post mortem on the child's body is expected to be carried out later today in a bid to establish the cause of death.

Police are expected to be at the scene for several hours.

The site opened in 1997 and is owned by Peterborough City Council.
