British Transport Police Investigate Train Vandalism
British Transport Police (BTP) are appealing for witnesses after a train hit a shopping trolley which had been thrown onto the railway line in Nottinghamshire.
The incident happened close to a bridge near the Elmton and Cresswell signal box at 2.10pm on 22 August.
The train, which was a freight liner, ran over the trolley. BTP said no damage was caused and no-one was injured.
Sergeant Mick Dawes, of BTP, said: "This was a reckless act of vandalism. I cannot emphasise strongly enough the dangers associated with this type of crime. It's vital that we find those involved in this incident in order to point out the possible catastrophic consequences of their action.
"I would urge anyone who was in or around the area on Friday afternoon to contact BTP if they saw anything suspicious or have any information that may help us with our inquiries."
In a separate incident, BTP have issued a warning after youths threw stones at a passing train in Sheffield, smashing two windows.
The incident happened at about 5pm on July 29. A group of youths were seen to throw stones from a rail overbridge at Woodhouse at the Scunthorpe to Gainsbrough train.
The suspects are described as being aged between 11 and 14.
They were said to be wearing blue baseball caps. Two of them were wearing white Real Madrid football shirts and the third was wearing a t-shirt.
Sergeant Mick Dawes, of BTP, said: "Throwing objects at trains is extremely dangerous. This type of behaviour can have serious consequences. There is potential for a serious accident to be caused or injury to the train's passengers and staff. Thankfully on this occasion, no-one was hurt."
BTP have appealed for witnesses to come forward.
