Tot Remains Critical After Air Rifle Injury

An 18-month-old boy remains in a critical condition after being shot in the head with an airgun, police say.

Rashid Rullah was playing with his five-year-old sister in the family's garden in Washwood Heath, Birmingham when the incident happened on Sunday evening.

It is understood that their father Bakht Zaman, a 29-year-old handyman used the air rifle for target practice.

Shortly before 7pm, Mr Zaman turned his back on the children to answer his mobile phone, as he did so, he left the gun loaded for his next shot.

The children's grandfather, Bakht Rammand, said the boy's sister Asna Almas picked up the gun and accidentally shot the toddler in the back of the head.

Rashid was treated by an ambulance crew at the family home in Bennetts Road before being taken to hospital.

On Monday night, surgeons were still unable to operate on the boy at Birmingham's Children's Hospital. The tot remains unconscious.

A hospital spokesman confirmed the boy is still being treated but said he was unable to give further details of his condition.

Mr Rammand, 48, said: "Everybody's in shock. There are no words to describe it really. The whole road loves them."

"This does appear to be a tragic accident involving young children," he said.

Liam Byrne MP, said: "No matter the circumstances, everyone's prayers and thoughts should be with little Rashid and his family. They will be going through absolute hell."
