Glitter Released From Vietnam Prison
Convicted sex offender Garry Glitter (pictured in his entertianmnet days) has been released from a Vietnamese prison after serving most of his sentence for offences against children.
Former glam rock singer, Glitter, 64, is to be deported after being jailed in March 2006 for molesting two girls aged 11 and 12.
It is understood Glitter was released at about 11.30 local time after his overall entence was reduced because of good behaviour.
Tran Huu Thong, Director of the Z30D Thu Duc prison in southern Binh Thuan province, said that guards were in the process of transporting Glitter to the Ho Chi Minh City airport – about three to four hours away from the prison in the Binh Thuan province.
His lawyer, Le Thanh Kinh, said that Glitter, real name Paul Francis Gadd, could use his British passport to travel anywhere.
"He has served his sentence and the authorities in Vietnam will deport him. He does not have any sentence to serve in London. If he wants to stop wherever he wants he can do that," he said.
He added that his client had wanted to return to the UK and had a ticket for London.
A Foreign Office spokesman said it was "a matter for Mr Gadd and the Vietnamese authorities" where Glitter went after he was deported.
However, if Glitter lands in London he will be met by police at the airport and will be required to sign the sex offenders list.
The disgraced star will then be subject to monitoring and will have to inform police where he plans to live and if he plans to travel abroad.
He could also face an order banning him from going near children or using the internet.
Glitter was deported from Cambodia in 2003 over alleged sex offences.
The star has maintained his innocence saying after he was sentenced: "I haven't done anything – I am innocent. It is a conspiracy by you know who."
He has told a British newspaper that he was considering making a comeback as a singer.
