Man United Player Awarded Damages

A former Manchester United player has been awarded more than £4.3 million damages for a tackle that ended his career.

Ben Collett, 23, who Manchester United Manager Sir Alex Ferguson called an "outstanding" player, broke his leg in a reserve game against Middlesbrough, in 2003.

Middlesbrough Football Club's Gary Smith and the club admitted liability for the "negligent" tackle and the court's task was to decide on the level of compensation that Collett should received from Middlesbrough's insurers.

It is understood the compensation to be received by the 23-year-old will be even greater when sums for future loss of pension and interest on past loss of earnings are determined at a hearing set for October.

Mrs Justice Swift, sitting at London's High Court, said the final sum payable to Collett was "unlikely to be less than £4.5 million".

The judge said had it not been for the injury, Collett would have been offered a three-year professional contract with Manchester United.

The match against Middlesbrough had been Collett's debut for United's reserve team, at the age of 18.

Collett joined United's youth academy at nine years old and signed youth contracts before becoming part of the club's FA Youth Cup-winning team in 2003.

However, his right leg was broken in two places in the match in May 2003, ending his career in professional football.

The 10-year-old grandson of Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has undergone surgery after being involved in a car crash with his mother and sister. Nadine Ferguson, 30, the ex-wife of Sir Alex's son Darren, was airlifted to hospital in Manchester following the crash near her Cheshire home on Tuesday.

Manchester United Fans Stabbed At Champions League Tie
Football violence has marred a Champions League tie between Manchester United and Roma. Five United fans were stabbed during clashes with Roma supporters before Wednesday night’s final group match. Seven people were taken to hospital, one of those being a 16 year old boy who needed treatment for intoxication.

Vodafone pulls plug on Manchester United shirt deal
Vodafone has announced that they will end their sponsorship of football club Manchester United at the end of this season. The mobile phone firm has sponsored the Premier League club since 2000. The current deal, worth £36 million, was expected to run for four years. However, it was confirmed on Wednesday that the contract would now end in May 2006.

Glazer gains 98% of Manchester United shares
American tycoon Malcolm Glazer has confirmed that he has acquired 98% of shares in Premiership football club Manchester United. Mr Glazer needed to have 97.6% ownership of the club in order to be able to force the remaining shareholders to sell their shares to him. He will now be able to force a compulsory buyout of the remaining shareholders.
