Teenager Shot Dead Outside London Convenience Store
The teenager shot dead in a supermarket in south-east London yesterday was an innocent bystander.
The victim, thought to be 18, was shot at the Costcutter store on Camberwell Road, Walworth, on Wednesday.
Police were called to the scene at 9.41pm after an emergency call saying a man had been shot.
A London Ambulance Service spokesman said: "Extensive efforts were made to resuscitate the patients but sadly he was pronounced dead at the scene."
It is understood that several people fled the area on mopeds after the attack.
A 19-year-old man has been arrested and is being questioned at a south London police station.
A police spokeswoman said: "At this early stage it appears the victim went into the shop and was then shot."
A man selling flowers close to the crime scene said his friend had witnessed the shooting.
He said that five young men had been seen running down the busy shopping street and had been trying to get inside the Costcutter shop.
The witness said that one young man at the back of the group did not make it inside and appeared to be shot in the back of the neck.
Police say the victim, who is black, has not been formally identified and that a post mortem will take place later.
A cordon has been placed around the premises and access to adjacent buildings, Allied Carpets and an NHS clinic has been restricted.
One of the shops windows has been shattered and tarpaulin has been hung from the shop to cover the ground.
Officers from Operation Trident, the unit which specialises in gun crime, are investigating the incident.
Det Supt Gary Richardson said: "We are keeping an open mind regarding the motive of this murder.
"However, it appears at this stage that the victim has no links to gang activity and that he was an innocent bystander - caught up in the crossfire and was not the intended target."
The killing marks the 22nd young person to be killed as a result of violence in London this year.
