Police Quiz Rooney Over 'Spitting' Assault

Police are quizzing Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney after an alleged spitting incident.

The footballer, who also plays for England, has been interviewed under caution by police after allegedly spitting at a paparazzi photographer.

A spokesman for the 22-year-old says he is "blameless".

"Wayne was interviewed by police in connection with an alleged minor offence involving a paparazzi photographer who had been persistently invading his and Coleen's privacy throughout the evening.

"Wayne was happy to co-operate fully and to give a clear version of the events in which he believes he was blameless," he said.

It is reported that Rooney was leaving a restaurant, near Oxford Street, with his wife Coleen when the incident happened.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said they had received a third party allegation that "a photographer had been spat at by an individual outside a restaurant in Hanway Street".

"Officers established the incident occurred at approximately 10.20pm on Tuesday evening," he said.

The spokesperson added that Rooney was not arrested and did not attend a police station and that inquiries are continuing.

Deliberately spitting at another person constitutes as an offence of common assault under UK law.

Rooney currently earns a salary of around £130,000 a week.

His transfer fee from Everton stands as the highest ever paid for a teenager.
