Shock Booze Figures Hide Tragic Reality
New Government figures released today have revealing that 811,000 people in England were admitted to hospital with alcohol misuse problems.
According to medical professionals, though shocking in their own right, these figures - from 2006 - actually hide the individual tragedies that hospital frontline staff see day in day out.
The BMA's Head of Science and Ethics, Dr Vivienne Nathanson, said: "While this figure is rightly very frightening and shocking, it also hides the hundreds and thousands of individual tragedies that doctors witness every day.
"Alcohol misuse is related to over 60 medical conditions including heart and liver disease, diabetes, strokes and mental health problems – it costs the NHS millions of pounds every year and is linked to accidents and street violence.
"The truth is there is nothing glamorous about drinking too much alcohol – it wrecks health, lives and families.
"The BMA will be responding in full to the Government's consultation on alcohol and we will certainly be backing tough action like introducing mandatory regulation and labelling and restricting 'happy hours' and irresponsible drinks promotions .
"There can be no more softly, softly approach. The access and affordability of alcohol must be tackled head on," he said in conclusion.

An estimated one in eleven children in the UK are living with parents who misuse alcohol, according to a report. Social care charity Turning Point said that children whose parents had alcohol problems often suffered behavioural, emotional and school-related problems.

JD Wetherspoon has begun serving alcohol at a motorway services in Buckinghamshire. The Hope and Champion restaurant and bar at junction two on the M40 at Beaconsfield, will open from 04:00 to 01:00 and begin serving alcohol from 09:00.

Plans to introduce minimum alcohol pricing for England and Wales have been shelved. Announcing the move, minister Jeremy Browne said there were fears the policy would hit responsible drinkers but added that the policy would remian "under consideration".

Charity Calls For Ban On Alcohol Advertising
Alcohol companies should be banned from advertising at sporting and music events, the charity Alcohol Concern has said. The ban would limit the exposure of young people to such advertising, as the charity claims that young people more readily recognise alcohol brands over ice cream and cake products.
