Caver Dies After Mineshaft Rescue

A caver who was rescued from a mineshaft has died in hospital.

Thirty-seven-year-old Peter Ireson, from Livingston, died on Sunday evening after being pulled out of the shaft at the Wisp in the Newcraighall area of Edinburgh.

It is understood the Grampian Speleological Group member had been exploring the shaft when 30ft down and the oxygen available depleted to just 5%.

The atmosphere should be about 21% oxygen for people to breathe properly and it is reported that the experienced caver was unconscious by the time he he was taken to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary.

A member of the Grampian Speleological Group said Mr Ireson had 10 years' experience of caving.

The group's Treasurer, Ivan Young told a local news source that "he went down a short distance" and "in the process of that he went from essentially clear air into a very high concentration of gas, which was probably carbon dioxide".

However, Mr Young said that this had not been confirmed.

It is thought that Mr Ireson was in the shaft for about 45 minutes before he was rescued.

A fire and rescue service spokeswoman said he was found 10ft down the mineshaft suspended by a single line.

Mr Ireson, worked as an engineer and had no children.
