Police Officers Attacked By Mob In 'Litter Row'

Two police officers were attacked by a 30-strong mob in South London, today, after they asked a teenage girl to pick up litter.

The officers, aged 34 and 29 had approached a 15-year-old girl and asked her to pick up the waste that she had dropped in Northend, Croydon, South London. Metropolitan police said the girl initially picked up the litter when asked by the patrolling officers to do so. However, it is understood she immediately dropped it.

When asked to pick it up again, the teenager became aggressive towards the officers, sparking a violent confrontation by the crowd.

A group of around 30 people subsequently gathered around the policemen and attacked them. One of the officers was treated for a bite wound he sustained in the fracas. Both men also suffered bruising and sustained knee injuries.

A 15-year-old girl was arrested on suspicion of assault, and has since been released on bail.

Two men aged 34 and 38 from South Norwood were also arrested on suspicion of assault and violent disorder.

Metropolitan Inspector Simon Ellingham said officers are examining CCTV footage for more information on the incident.

"We have heard from several retailers in the area who were horrified at the level of violence used by the crowd against the officers," he said. "If you were in Northend, central Croydon, at around 3pm on Wednesday and saw anything of the incident, or have any information, please get in touch."
